Zanuck was an American motion picture executive and film producer. He served as president of 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, the motion picture studio that his father founded in 1935. Zanuck was born on May 11, 1916, in Los Angeles, California.

After attending the University School at Los Angeles for a short time, he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in New York City where he became a civil engineer. In 1933 he returned to Los Angeles to work for his father's company, then called Twentieth Century Pictures Corporation, which later became Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. In 1941 he left Fox to become a Hollywood movie director.

In 1942 he joined United States Army Air Forces and fought in World War II from 1942 to 1945 as a B-25 pilot in the China-Burma-India theater of operations. He shot down five Japanese planes before being shot down himself and being captured by the Japanese. After being a prisoner of war for five years, he was released through a prisoner exchange program.

Zanuck married actress Gloria Swanson on March 28, 1944.

The couple remained married until her death on July 3, 1970.

In 1962 Zanuck received an honorary degree from Princeton University and in 1966 he received an honorary degree from Harvard University.

Zanuck died of lung cancer on August 5, 1987 at age 69 in Beverly Hills, California.
